Abduction of Persephone Fireback

The story of Persephone, the daughter of Demeter (known as Ceres in Roman mythology), the goddess of agriculture, and her abduction by Hades, the god of the underworld, explains the cycle of the seasons. In her grief over losing Persephone, Demeter cast a barren winter upon the earth, causing widespread famine. Desperate to end the suffering, Zeus ordered his brother Hades to return Persephone to her mother. Hades agreed, but Persephone had eaten six pomegranate seeds that day. According to divine law, for each seed she consumed, she was bound to spend one month of the year in the underworld with Hades. As a result, Persephone spends part of the year—spring and summer, the season of growth and bloom—on earth with her mother, bringing life and renewal to the land. The rest of the year, she returns to the underworld, and the earth falls into autumn and winter. This myth of Demeter, Hades, and Persephone is a Greek explanation for the origin and cycle of the seasons. Persephone is celebrated as the goddess of spring (Roman: Proserpina).
